Adam MorrisonWell, a lot to talk about this week, with lots going on in the rookie scene.  Brandon Roy is out longer than expected, and a few Jazz rookies are beginning to make an impact.  Overall, it was a great week in general for most rookies, and these rankings are going to be a little Jazzed up (pun intended).
1. Adam Morrison (Up)

Even if Brandon Roy wasn’t out, I’d still probably give Morrison the top spot.  Although he had a bad game Monday (just 7 points), he’s been a beast in the past week, playing over 37 minutes in each of his last four games.  He dropped 21 points and seven boards against the Hornets on the 14th, and followed that up with a huge 27 point game against the Spurs the next day, playing 48 minutes in the overtime win.  Morrison is playing huge minutes, and with huge minutes come huge scoring, which he has shown.

chris boshWelcome to DroppingDimes.com‘s weekly position rankings list!  Each week, the five writers - Al, Ron, Sarge, Zack, and myself will look at our lists of positions, take into account the number of games played, any injury issues that a player may be having, and the hotness/coldness of a player at that time to rank ‘em all up!

We’ll rank EACH position into a Top 15 list and in parentheses have that player’s average position ranking amongst the five of us.  First up… number of games for each team then the week’s rankings afterwards.

Atlanta Hawks - 3; Boston Celtics - 3; Charlotte Bobcats - 4; Chicago Bulls - 3; Cleveland Cavaliers - 4; Dallas Mavericks - 4; Denver Nuggets - 4; Detroit Pistons - 4; Golden State Warriors - 4; Houston Rockets - 3; Indiana Pacers - 4; Los Angeles Clippers - 4; Los Angeles Lakers - 3; Memphis Grizzlies - 4; Miami Heat - 4; Milwaukee Bucks - 3; Minnesota Timberwolves - 3; New Jersey Nets - 4; New Orleans Hornets - 4; New York Knicks - 4; Orlando Magic - 4; Philadelphia 76ers - 4; Phoenix Suns - 4; Portland Trail Blazers - 4; Sacramento Kings - 3; San Antonio Spurs - 4; Seattle Supersonics - 4; Toronto Raptors - 4; Utah Jazz - 4; Washington Wizards - 4

Shawn Marion I went to dinner with two friends a couple of weeks ago. As usual, the conversation gravitated towards the entertainment industry. One of them said he gave The Departed a thumbs down because it was “too predictable” and then proceeded to say he was shocked at the ending. He then laughed every time as we recalled some of the funny lines in the movie. The other friend was asked what his “single of the year” was, a question that stumped the rest of us. He noted that he really liked the new Keane album so he would probably choose a song on there, and then remarked that he hated the single they actually released when I began to sing it. Maybe he just didn’t like my singing.

In the world of e-revenge, people can pan everything from a movie to a restaurant to a doctor faster than ever before. The natural response is to focus on the negative. Since Ron has the injury news on lock-down, Zack is keeping track of the rooks, Scott is combing through the waiver wire for all our benefit, and Dennis is busy conquering the fantasy sports world, today Dime Day looks at Yahoo’s top ranked players pre-season and looks at their production thus far using the critical eye. Does the Matrix get the love in the end?

DescriptionIt was reported on Friday November 17, Miami Heat Center Shaquille O’Neal will need surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee and will be out four to six weeks. It was originally diagnosed that Shaq was out due to a hyperextended left knee. Shaq has already missed five of the Heat’s nine game played so far.

Reported earlier this week on November 16, Milwaukee Bucks Forward Charlie Villanueva will miss at least four weeks due to a torn ligament in his left elbow. He suffered the injury on Tuesday’s game against Atlanta when he took a hard fall on his elbow.

The Denver Nuggets’ Kenyon Martin is done like a Thanksgiving turkey after the leftovers are taken to lunch the week after Thanksgiving. K-Mart had microfracture surgery on his right knee and will be out for the rest of the season. Kenyon had microfracture surgery on his left knee 18 months ago. It is hard enough to recover from microfracture surgery on one knee but for both knees?! I hope this is not the end of Kenyon Martin’s career.

Baron DavisStat’s All Folks will be a week-to-week stock market look at the standard cumulative categories – points, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, steals, and blocks.  I’ll be calling out the “bulls” and “bears” in each category, in order to help you assess your portfolio of players on your fantasy basketball team(s) and whether you should sell, hold, and/or diversify your assets.

Statistics are through November 9th – 15th.

POINTS

BULLISH

Baron Davis, PG, Golden State Warriors
Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 3 G; 26.0 PPG; 49.1 FG%; 69.2 FT%

Head coach Don Nelson’s up-tempo offense is like Mickey D’s to Davis – he’s lovin’ it!  Although, if you look at the new slimmer and trimmer Davis, he isn’t loving cheeseburgers and fries as much anymore.  While, he’s revealing that he is “the man” in the new offense – scoring points, passing off assists, and actually shooting decent percentages – let’s hope Davis doesn’t pull a Kirstie Alley and flaunt the weight loss.  Baron, just show off your game!

Joe Johnson, PG/SG, Atlanta Hawks
Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 3 G; 30.3 PPG; 50.0 FG%; 82.4 FT%

Okay, tell me if you’ve heard this one before – Joe Johnson is no “ordinary Joe.”  That must have been the twelfth time this week, right?  Well, Johnson just can’t help making news and receiving the adulation of writers as he is just flat-out playing like an MVP right now.  J.J. is showing a healthy appetite for putting the ball in the basket and this week isn’t any sort of fluke as Johnson’s been scoring more than Ken Jennings in a round of Jeopardy from the start of the season.  It should be noted that J.J. ranked third overall last week in scoring with 28.7 points in three games.  Just call him “extraordinary Joe.”

Other Blue-Chippers for the Week

Michael Redd, SG, Milwaukee Bucks – 4 G; 35.0 PPG
Carmelo Anthony, SF, Denver Nuggets – 4 G; 33.5 PPG
Dwyane Wade, PG/SG, Miami Heat – 3 G; 31.7 PPG

Keep An Eye On

Carlos Boozer, PF/C, Utah Jazz – 3 G; 23.0 PPG
Tony Parker, PG, San Antonio Spurs – 3 G; 22.0 PPG

Shaun Livingston
It is time again to take a look at the young stars of the NBA and their fantasy potential. Here we pit a frosh against a sophomore and a junior. Why no senior, you ask? The class of 2003 has already distinguished itself: Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, etc. It seems unfair to pit Flash against a rookie. Staying on point, 3-2-1 Impact features three players who hold down the point guard position.

Adam MorrisonThere haven’t been any downright fantastic rookie performances yet this year, but some rookies have played pretty well.  Brandon Roy, everyone’s favorite rookie, had 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists against the Warriors on Friday, November 3rd.  Rudy Gay must have gotten a lot of girls (there’s the first lame joke you’ll hear from me) after his 21 point, 8 rebound, 4 block game against the Knicks Wednesday, November 1st.  Shelden Williams has an incredible 1.000 FT % this year (OK, so it’s only 2-2, but still, give the man some props).  Kyle Lowry had 10 rebounds on opening night against the Knicks, which is kind of weird.
Anyway, since we are a pitiful brood that needs to be reading and researching fantasy basketball 24/7, and probably some of you out there have never had a girlfriend (it’s OK, at least you still have your favorite team), I’ll start a very preliminary rookie ratings list, examining my top five rookies, and their potential input for our fantasy teams in the future.

Lebron James
The argument against Lebron James for the best fantasy player in the league goes something like this. As great as Lebron is, his free throw percentage is terrible. He goes to the line so much that he really hurts your team in that category. Not to mention his turnovers!

The fantasy basketball community has a skewed perspective on free throw percentage. That’s a nice way of saying we’ve got it all wrong.
